When did Amtrak begin? I always thought it was a fairly recent company, starting in the mid seventies, but my folks tell me its been around a while. This question I had started when I kept seeing Amtrak GG1 train sets on Lionel Train videos. I didn't know Amtrak had any GG1's, did they?
1 April 1971 Amtrak took over the vast majority of passenger rail in the US. They did inherit former PennCentral GG1s. As a side note their current milage is about half what it was in 1971. When NJT came about,They ended up with the GG1's from Conrail.Conrail had taken over many Northeastern companies,including passenger lines.In 1983 was when NJT took over the passenger lines in the State.
