I had a chance to have a lunch at a resturant near Sam Sen station. After I filled up my tummy, railfaning began.

    Passenger extra makes a visit

No, there isn't any steamer behind him.

Train 172 (Rapid, Bangkok-Sungai Kolok) comes in for boarding.

This Alsthom gave me a good smoking while he gave all his guts yanking Train 172 out of the station.

Train 140 takes the grade crossing interlock signal for the departure.

    Another train headed for Bangkok

Excellent photos I like the way they have highlighted the backgrounds of the signal by painting them red.

Excellent photographs! I love smoky diesels :D Good to see locomotive hauled passenger trains, they are getting scarce in the UK.

Are there any freight trains on that line?

Most of freight train originated at Bang Sue Jct but, there are some container trains from eastern seaboard and an oil train from Mae Nam Station. Sometime SRT run them in the darkness of the night so I can't take photo of them. FYI, Some **** in our government decided that our passeger/commuter ops is one of the cause of our famous traffic jam and they have SRT throttle back some of their ops to a train per 10 minutes. what a ... logic

Hi SRT-FAN! I've a lot of fun reading your post, because as an airline pilot I'm currently flying sectors between Scandinavia and your wonderful country where I'm going too scarcely in my opinion!

And that's why 3 days ago I was in Bangkok main station for railfanning and picturing, including the shot below.

On my next sector to Bangkok on next week I plan to go to former capital Ayuttahia by train, and I'll take more pictures (and mostly freights as it's that has more appeal to my eyes!:shade: )

Dominique, nice photo. Looking forward to more photos from your next trip to Thailand.

What I find interesting from your and Sophon's photos is that SRT locos do not have massive structures built in front of the cab to protect the crew as seen on US railroads.

Hi Hytec, are you speaking of the platform in front of the cab, or the shape of the cab itself, a la Safety Cab (GE Dash9, EMD SD70)? If I understand you speak of the platform in front of the cab, these massive structures are only found on road-switchers as far as I know.

And in this case, If I look at first generation full carbody diesels, such as EMD E or F-units, or Alco PA (or even the brand of GE Shovel-Nose found on the WP&Y RR), I don't see any.

Dominique, great picture! Looks like that locomotive could use a repaint :D

I look forward to more pictures from this fascinating country. :)

Yes, SRT's locos don't have much heavy metal between outside and the cab. Sometime, when the train tangles with a big rig or ten-wheel truck, the result is very ugly: loco get wrecked (sometime beyond repair:angry:) and engineer and/or fireman is injured or killed in action.

I've heard that US style locos have honking big steel bars inside the wide nose to help porotect the cab, is it true?

I can't answer that, but I'm sure any of our active operating crew members have first-hand knowledge.
