I know that the subject of homemade decals has been covered well already, but I have searched quite a few of the previous threads on decals but couldn't find an answer. My question concerns black decals printed on white paper to simulate white lettering.

I sprayed a tender with glosscoat. I layed the decal down and set it with Microsol. After a couple of Microsol treatments, it snuggled down pretty good. The white specks around the decal from where I cut it out of the sheet are still visible.

Should I touch up those areas with black paint before I dullcoat it? If so should I use gloss or flat black?

Or should I dullcoat it first and then touch it up with flat black?

BTW, I used Microscale's white trimfilm on a laser printer. Sealed the decal with Krylon varnish.

    Match the Sheen

If you can, I would match the sheen of the tender as it is with the Gloss Cote on it. Then, theoretically, when you Dull Cote it, it will all look the same. Remember there is a satin finish as well as dull and gloss. Also, it would be very important to experiment on something else first, even if this means painting and decaling a sheet of styrene for practice.

I understand exactly what you are describing. It is discouraging. I would get it as close as I could and then weather it as necessary to obscure flaws, if any.

We have some professional painters here; they have some ideas, I am sure.

Actually, I have a slew of roling stock that will have to be "weatherized" to make them look good and to cover my mistakes. :)
