just got this from the trainboard N scale site. it's a GP28. only 16 units were build (they report). I gleen from the interactions that NW had a few in high hood (but i may be getting it wrong), and conrail too. ICG for sure

here is chuck's (slsfnut) kitbash from a basic GP35:

from the discussion it seems there were actually only TWO exhaust stacks, not four -- modeler's license!

and here is a picture link of an ICG unit:

the topic is called: "My two latest loco projects". go take a look!

anyway, another conversion idea which looks very doable in Z scale.

    David,
Yes, this could be a project for Z scalers. There we no high hood GP28's at all.... however, Southern had high hood GP35's (I am drawing a blank about N&W; I know they inherited some low nose units)

I am not sure about the quad stacks... some roads have converted their non-turbo units to "liberated" / 4 stacks. I saw an ex-CR GP38 yesterday that had this feature, and have seen it on other NS units...

Mopac had alot of engines like that too.

Yep, I think they were one of the first to coin the term "liberated exhaust". I think they did their GP18's.

You know that bodystyle looks almost exactly like a gp38 too! :D

It's a ICG rebuild, they added the GP38 paper air filter box... the fan spacing is the same as a GP38...

However, the flat dustbin hatch, radiator grills, and inertial intake grill need to be changed to do a GP38

    robbman,
    thanks for the info.

would the GP35 be a correct platform for a GP38? i thought 38s were longer (same as 40s). of course for Z scale application (with the only MT unit we have) it could be an acceptable compromise if the 35 was a bit short in reality.

also, from the discussion on the N forum, i was given to believe that GP28s were a factory build from EMD. no doubt RR updated, changed, varied their units (e.g. dustbin) but is it your understanding that GP28s were all factory units?

thanks for you insights and help.

The mechanism would work (the 1' change in wheelbase won't be that perceptable), but you'd need a new sill/handrail (it's 3' longer)

Yes, the GP28 is an EMD unit... but that model is of an ICG rebuild of a GP28... as built, GP28s do not have the paper air filter box.

PS, the flat dustbin is a 35 series feature... later GP/SD35 have the more familiar raised hatch...
