A structure that size should have been significant for the community. :(

I visited Salamanca on July 15 (was going to start another RailFanning thread on that day-trip). Took lots of photos of both the old Erie RR depot, as well as the old Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh depot, which is now the train museum there. I just posted all my photos in this album, and will create a thread sometime in the next few days

Here are a couple of the photos of the structure now lost

The building was owned by the Seneca Nation, and they were, supposedly, still debating what to do with it

Wow. Good timing. You might have been the last railfan to document it.

    Wow what a beautiful building...
Things like this usually happen in AU when developers have their eye on something and the council is slowing down their permit applications to demolish it.

The same thing happens here. I suspect that it was happened to this building. Also, railroad companies have been known to torch a building, even a bridge... Or sneak in a bulldozer during the wee hours, smash it flat, then scurry away before sunrise.

Yep, happens here.. Councils are also famous for doing things like that when they know it will never get approved if the lemmings find out about it before hand.. then they get a talking to and told they are norty and don't do it again... until next time.

The same here. If you or I did it, we'd be in a prison. Those guys just walk away like nothing ever happened.

It was more complicated in Salamanca. You had two different governments involved. The Seneca Nation (a sovereign nation, within the US) owned the building; but it was in the city limits, too, so both had jurisdiction. Based on the number of other fires in that area, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a non-permitted demolition. When my wife and I pulled up to it, 2 weeks ago, there was an "official" looking guy just leaving it.
