N&W (now NS) ran through my hometown. Although a diehard C&O guy there is a soft spot in my heart for those filthy old N&W diesels. And they ran a few steam trains years ago for railfans through Peru, Indiana. And its my understanding that N&W was one of the last to run steam although I dont remeber it.

Hi. New member as of today . Huge n&w fan. I grew up less than a mile from the schafer`s crossing main shops in roanoke . My grandparents lived less than 200 feet from the abingdon branch at creek junction. I grew up with the n&w in the 40`s and 50`s. Love it. RON

I've ben around here for several years. I grew up in a railroad family in Bluefield, WV and VA in the 50's and 60's. My grandparents house had a good view of the yard (grandparents used to kid that was a reliable "baby-sitter" when I was small) and our house in Bluefield, VA had a ringside view of the Clinch Valley line during the final years of steam.

I am a fan of N&W even though I was 5 years old when they got absorbed into Norfolk Southern. The bridge/viaduct that they used in Connellsville is still around, though abandoned since the 70's when it lost the connection with the Western Maryland. I have dozens of photos of it if anyone would be interested in something like that.

N&W had two main caboose designs in the steam era (wood or steel):

    1) The CF class wood caboose (steel underframe):

Here's a view of the other side in an earlier pre-1940s scheme:

    2) And the standard N&W steel caboose (class CG, CH, and C2 - all very similar):

Similar to the CF class, the other side of the steel cabins (CG/CH/C2) have only 2 windows on the body.

The C3 was also used in steam era, but they were built in 1958:

I will be scratch building some CFs so PM me if you need plans for it.
