While not my favorite prototype, it is nontheless one of my top three, SAL, ACL, and Southern. So far I've managed to acquire more models for Southern than for my second favorite - ACL. And, some questions for "real" Southern fans; 1. Are/is there any good material available about Southern Rwy. express box cars/reefers? 2. Are any decal sets available for the Southern style lettering used on the CofG and S&A cars right after the merger?
Harold - I'm not sure! I'm reasonably certain that they had them, having somewhere a Trains magazine that showed an express reefer with Southern reporting marks (#3015 - I think) marked "Milk." None of the photos I have of Southern passenger trains, whether steam or diesel, are close enough, or the cars are not clean enough - to make out their markings. While there are plenty of photos of head-end cars for ACL or SAL, find it strange that I've never been able to find any of Southern's. As a matter of fact, think I've got at least one of every head-end car lettered for ACL and SAL - have never even seen express reefers or boxes for Southern in H.O. scale. Current intent on my forever abuilding layout is to put some of my Southern passenger power to work on a head-end heavy passenger train.
I am new to this site, and my grand intent is to model the Crescent line on my G-Scale layout. Even LGB is now showing signs of enjoying the Southern line, as they now have a starter set in the Southern livery.
I model the Southern and Norfolk Southern on my layout. I'm a Southern fan, just bought a Southern Passenger Timetable dated 1978 at the Neuse River Valley Model Railroad Club Train Show this past weekend, I was told it was the last one published too. Here is a photo you might like:
Well, they did buy the CG but then they painted all the beautiful blue & gray locomotives with that boring tuxedo scheme. Although they did have a nice looking SD24!
08 Nov 2007 Southern Railway is one of the prime customers for the SCRS. Their passenger and freights trains create some heavy traffic rolling over the Southern Coastline Railway System. . Two more prime customers, the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line also create a lot of passenger and freight traffic. At times when the passenger trains are 12 to 15 cars long - moving in and out of the Union Station, the traffic controllers really have to keep a clear head. SCRS - 'The bridge line of the southeast'. Larry @ SCRS
New guy to the forum And a Southern fan too. I guess i will be the one to wake up the sleeping giant.
Mikado, nice photo! Southern had some of the best looking paint schemes on their locos of any railroad. Thanks for sharing!
I'm a Southern Railfan, but not badly addicted. I've roughly based my freelanced layout in progress (2yrs now) on the Southern in Alabama. It's called the Birmingham Southern-Gulf Mobile. I've a several Southern locomotives in cresent green and black/white. I've not yet laid track :tb-sad: so nothings been run as yet.:tb-ooh: See ya Ron
I don't know if you all have ever been to Tom Daspit's great Southern fan site, http://southern.railfan.net/, but he has a lot of information for modelers as well as a terrific photo gallery. I'm not sure if he has what you're looking for, but it has been a wealth of information for me. Also check out http://www.hosam.com/srr/srr.html for painting info and the Southern numbering system and a host of other nuggets. Enjoy!
