    1. Dont let it be apparent that you are interested in trains
    2. They prefer military experience
    3. Its not a job, its a lifestyle

David, Welcome to TB...We have some current and ex- rail employees who can advise you. Car&Trainnut2's points are largely true - especially that about lifestyle. You might also want to look at http://www.yardlimits.com/ ...railroaders interact there - it's not a hobby for all of them, so the responses will be a little different, but just as knowledgeable, relevant and enlightening. Good luck in your chance for a new occupation. Bob C.

There are a LOT of railroaders on furlough right now. I doubt that very many,if any,new hires will be taken until those furloughed have been recalled. This is just NOT a good time
to be railroading. Hopefully things will improve soon.

If you don't get the job, just keep applying for jobs.

Be prepared to live a totally different lifestyle than you have ever lived before. If this is really what you want don't give up keep applying. Be honest when answering questions written or oral. As far as the down turn in rail traffic at this time it will come back and usually comes back bigger than before. Good luck.

They love the word safety. Be sure and use that as much as possible on your application. And never say that you're not willing to relocate, that's a minus.

Yep, it's a lifestyle alright. Like ct8000 said, safety safety safety. As also mentioned, just be honest. If you have a criminal record, forget about it and I'm not talking about parking tickets here. The way the economy is going and if you can it would be helpful to have a employer that can take you in on a as you need work basis too, like a friend or family member that can give you a job if you need one.

    Good luck.
