I see a LOT of Lionel SD-50s for sale on Ebay and other auction sites. I was considering getting one. But with so many out there for sale I was wondering if they are any good? Or is there something wrong with them? Is everybody who owns one is trying to dump them onto unsuspecting people / O scale newbies such as myself?
I cannot think of any problems, either heard or read. Perhaps try a Google search and see if anything comes up? If there is trouble, usually there is some chatter to be found.
From what I know, I have heard that they are good models. Seeing as you are also in Denver, I would recommend going to the train show that is happening at the Forney Museum this weekend on the 27th and 28th., because a seller there might have one of them. That way you can actually get a good look at one of them and ask questions to see if it is good or bad. You can also potentially see how well it runs too.
