Hello, any of you modelers out there from Utah? I think I posted a similar thread a while back to see if anyone knew of any model clubs in Utah, or actually lived it Utah and wouldn't mind someone browsing their layout.
An interesting side note, I saw a couple engines (small like GP38's) that were painted in an ash-blue and maroon and yellow scheme, lettered for Utah Railway...didn't even know such a thing existed. Almost eveything we see around here is Union Pacific.
A question, on the end of the freight consists that come through once in a while you will see 1 or 2 beat-up passenger coaches at the tail-end. What are these used for?
Also noticed the consists was being pulled by 6 massive triple axle UP's (believe they were Mac90's but not sure). Quite a site to see, and the noise was great.

The National Narrow Gauge Convention is being held in SLC in September. There are numerous tours of club and home layouts associated with the convention. Check out their website: http://www.21nngc.com

You don't have to be a narrower gauger to enjoy the convention. I model standard gauge and really enjoyed to two conventions I have attended. It is really a prototype and model railroad convention on a more personal level than the NMRA convention. On top of that, you don't have to join any organization to go. The layout tours are included in the price of the convention where at the NMRA you pay extra.

The website has a list of layouts on the tour so you might be able to use that information to contact participant.

    No, I'm from Arizona.

I have little guess on those beatup cars.

I would say scrap, but then they would not have gone through the troble of bringing them up to code. They might be for moving crews around, due to a shortage at one end, or for checking the great expansive UP rail system for defects and possible dangers or encroaching disaster.

They could also be dynometers, although I have no knowledge about these cars.

I live in Utah. The Utah Railway Company was incorporated on January 24, 1912, in the State of Utah under the name of Utah Coal Railway Company. On May 4, 1912, it was amended to Utah Railway
Company. The main office is in Martin, UT (Helper). There is also an office in Provo on the south end of Colorado AV. It also is used for the BNSF crew change.

Just a guess but they could be outfit cars for work/wreck trains. Usually a chow car and a sleeper.

Hello slimjim375, thanks for the information, and I enjoyed the link. I wasn't aware that there were so many rail lines in utah...quite a history of them. Never knew of the gas/electric lines.
Are you a modeler as well as a train enthusiast? I am just starting in the hobby and do to time, space and money constraints I don't get to do as much as I would like to.

Ya, I am a modeler. Into Sn3, but do not have a layout, just a test track set up for HO, HOn3 and Sn3.
