I'm thinking of building a 2x4 HO module with an asphalt hot mix plant and a ready mix plant, serviced by a trackmobile. https://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3085 http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3086 Could both plants exist in the same area? Where would the tracks go? (The pics, oddly enough, show only trucks but no railcars.) I'd appreciate any links to layouts with these industries or to resources. Thanks.
There are several that I'm aware of in eastern Wisconsin. They are all paving companies. I had the same company in Waukesha lay my mixed concrete and asphalt drive way and in West Allis the ready mix company also had small quantities of asphalt for sale.
Absolutely, I work in the highway industry, state government in particular. There are atleast three plants within 50 miles that mix asphalt, batch concrete and several other things all on one property. Sent from my LG-P930 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks all, that's good to know. Do you have any idea where on these models the track should go? Their pics only show trucks not railcars.
At the plant near me, only trucks .............there is a cement plant about 6 miles away, and it is trucked in. They spot a pressure aided trailer next to the plant and the trailer is plumbed into the plant. They rotate the trailers as needed. There is virtually no storage at the plant for cement. Train cars full of cement roll by the facility, but they never stop. For the asphalt, They DO use rail service, but the tank cars are spotted on a team track in town (the plant is on the edge of town) and the company uses tank trucks to move the material as it's needed. Not much help, but in most areas, I think the volume of material needed is relatively low (by railroad delivery standards)......I've seen the same cement trailer hooked to the plant for 3 or 4 days, and a train car is usually at least 3 truck loads, so that's only 1 train car every 2 weeks.
> but the tank cars are spotted on a team track in town That's actually an interesting idea, Dave, that could help with the design: the structures and the track could be in totally different areas of the module, as long as there were trucks to do the transfer.
