The spur was built to transport byproducts (such as sulphur) out of the region. Large components for the oil sands project will be transported by the ANR.
The 507 km line from Edmonton to Fort McMurray is operated by the ANR and the Lakeland & Waterways Railway (LWR). The line has 14 locomotives, and more than 100 cars. Can't find a good map on the 'Net! Is some of this trackage part of, or affiliated with what was once the Northern Alberta Railways?

Yes, it is part of the old Northern Alberta.

Here is a link to a map of the line -

Yeah, NAR is what came to mind immediately. I lived in Ft Mac for 3 years '85-'88. Had a chance to ride the old "Muskeg Mixed" a couple of times. Wasn't much traffic back then. I'm halfway surprised (but happy as all get out) that they never abandoned the line.

Do you mean that they extended the r-o-w from the old Waterways station up to one of the tarsands plants?

I've got a bunch of slides of the NAR and Waterways. The problem will be in digging them out. I also don't have a good way of digitizing them.

Good to hear of the old NAR again.

    Regards

I thought so! What caught my attention, was the word "Waterways." I knew that had a historical connection to older days of the NAR.
