Finally we will be getting a GP38 up to todays standards. I wish it was a GP38-2 though as UP uses 4 of them in the Fremont yard. I don't know how I am going to afford/detail all these new engines comming out. 6 SD90s, 6 SD60s, and now 6 GP38s. 18 locos at 60 bucks a pop thats $1080. I think I will have to work a little more this summer.
Until Atlas makes the announcement on their web site, I wouldn't hold my breath. I really doubt this is true. The GP38/38-2 has been Kato's baby for a long time. It was told to me via e-mail that Kato is looking at redoing the GP38 within the next few years. Atlas and Kato hardly ever (probably never) produce the same models in N-Scale. Sorry boys, until Atlas make it officail, this is rumor.
Looks pretty official to me. A company like BLW wouldn't place an add on their site for the sake of starting a rumour. Atlas has released this engine in HO, why not in Nscale? I think this is absoloutely outstanding. With manufacturers trying to grab more and more of the market, it can only ge better for us, the modellers. What will KATO come back with, that is the question, and what about L^2, is a modern diesel in the offering. http://www.blwnscale.com/Opening%20Page.htm
I made my post at the same time as the BLW link. I didn't see that until after I made my post. I'd say if BLW says it's happening, it PROBABLY is, but I still want to see Atlas announce it before I'm totally saticfied. Of course, I thought because I was back dating to the Mid-70's with my Santa Fe Modeling, I was off the new locomotive release hook. Of course, I'm going to need some Santa Fe 38's! That is if it is really happening!
As soon as i see this on the Atlas web site I guess I will be emailing JnJ again.... (sigh) more money....
No confirmation from Atlas yet. They certainly have had enough time to do so. If BLW was wrong I would think Atlas would make an announcement stating so immediately. I have to think that BLW somehow got some information ahead of the intended release time and ran with it without Atlas's approval or knowledge. I hope this is the case cause if BLW is wrong and Atlas is not doing the GP38 there will be a lot of very disappointed (if not downright hostile)people wanting answers. Not good for Atlas or BLW in the short term.
Well it's also posted on Walthers' site; http://www.walthers.com/exec/newproducts/ni/200106/Locomotive Bill Webb
We won't comment on our competitors but suffice to say that we have had this information on our website since yesterday http://www.nscaledivision.com Here's something else you fellas may be interested in knowing about it. ATLAS will only be building as many GP-38's as their distributors order and all ATLAS distributors need to have their final quantities into ATLAS no later than April 6th, 2001 so please reserve these at once so you don't miss out! We are excepting reservations right now (shameless plug for us) so please don't delay. The price has not been announced but we are offering 25% retail whatever that may be for those who reserve with us. http://www.nscaledivision.com [ 15 March 2001: Message edited by: swissrhb ]
What's the difference between a GP38, a GP38AC and a GP38-2? CP in 1999 Trackside guide has 21 GP38AC and 175 GP38-2's.
A GP38 has a 20" space between the radiator fans. A GP38-2 has a 5" space between the radiator fans. A GP38AC looks like a GP38.

Until Atlas says it's official, it's NOT.
well brent if the shops are saying it is so then it must be. i mean they do know most of the time especially the REPUTABLE ones. also kato never really said anything about releasing them again because of all the retooling that would be done oh wait a minute i forgot charlie wouldn't say anything. but anyway this is not the first i had heard of atlas doing these. it is about time for a all new unit since the junkmaster was the last new unit they made and it seems atlas does a new about every 6 months or so.

The brick-on-rails was a stupid decision. No store around here can get rid of them.

I don't know why they call it a GP38 too. So if they redo it I won't have a problem with a GP38 from Atlas and a GP38-2 from Kato.
I would rather have a GP38-2 but I will buy a Gp38 anyways. I just wish Kato would have done them. I hope Atlas does not use the same shallow detailed fans they used on there GP40/GP40-2. I will have to paint my GP38 in BN. Kevin
To continue on what Kevin said.... I also hope Atlas doesn't use the same lousy fuel tank and REALLY lousy THICK steps they used on there SD60......yuk! I'm done venting. I still like Kato a lot better!
