I just put a new engine in one of my many Alco RS11s. Actually I replaced the entire chassis with a new flywheel driven RS3 chassis and it is a perfect fit including how the fuel tank snaps on. The only modification was to file the nubs on the new chassis that held the original shell on. Nice to have the smoothness of the flywheels on one of my favorite locos.
Good to hear of your smooth running RS11. I have one, and would like more, but they are not as good as the newer models. Good idea to use an RS3 chassis, but I need more of them as well, so if I acquire more, I could not bear to take the chassis out of them! Oh well.....
I did almost the same thing, I took the trucks from an RSD4/5 and put them on a U25B that I modified into a U25C. that made one of these: Next I took the U25B trucks and put them on the RSD frame, and put that under an RS11 shell to get a smooth running RS11: Both are quite good runners, however there is a slight whining noise from the U25C which I suspect may be from the RSD trucks.
WHEN I STARTED OUT ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO IN THE HOBBY, I HAD A PAIR OF PENSSY RS-11'S. THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL LOOKING BEASTS, BUT MADE NOISE LIKE A CAT IN HEAT. SO I TRADED THE PAIR FOR A KATO SD40-SNOOT. IF I WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT I COULD INTER-CHANGE THE MOTOR I MIGHT HAVE KEPT THEM.
Robert, I have done exactly the same thing as you with a U25B shell and an RSD4/5 chassis. I have also painted my unit as NP. I will try and post a photo.
