    Greetings -

I purchased an undecorated Atlas Master Series "Silver" S-2 off eBay a few months ago for a decent price. I added my go-to decoder (TCS) to it and was astonished to find that the LED headlight that came with the unit didn't even line up with the headlight lens in the shell; so much so that it wasn't even visible through the lens hole.

I bent the LED wires so that the LED hung down over the front of the chassis but this only yield a marginal improvement - i.e. about 1/3 of the LED was visible. The lens of the LED also protruded out too far and interfered with the shell seating properly on the chassis. Since I didn't have adequate tools to grind down the nose of the chassis in my current situation, I determined that an SMT LED was the only solution to this issue.

I ordered a dozen 1206 "warm-white" SMT LEDs from an online vendor, which came with the wires already attached. I had to unsolder the wires from the back of the LED tabs and re-solder them to the front side so that that SMT LED would seat flush with the front of the chassis. I used 3M foam tape to hold the SMD LED in place. (For a lower profile: 3M double-stick tape would work.)

After a bit of trial 'n error I was able to get the LED centered through the lens hole of the shell. Once I was pleased with the placement, I pressed the LED into the foam tape to secure it in place. Here's what the installation looks like with the shell off and the view from the front with the headlight off and on:

I contacted Atlas and they are aware of the headlight issue on these units. Surprisingly, the rear LED headlight is just fine. In fact, Atlas did a great job of providing single-inline connectors for easily disconnecting the LED wires so that the cab can be removed. I'm not sure what happened with the front LED. Don Fidecaro stated in an email response to me that the "fit of the LED would be improved in the next run".

If you have one of these newer Atlas S-2s and are looking for a way to fix the front headlight alignment issue, the 1206 SMT LEDS are a viable solution.
