Have a chance to get a new Atlas U36C. I can get it for about $35.00.

    Here are my questions:

    1. Are these engines any good---are they on par with Atlas' other offerings as far as quality and smoothness of running?

    2. Do these Atlas engines come in different ATSF schemes or just the "kodachrome" version?

Is this engine worth getting overal or is reworking an Athearn UBoat a better bet?

As always, thanks for the help.

They are older technologies, some were shipped with defective DCC plugs in them But they are still good runners, have two of them myself running with DCC. Detailing not up to the U23B.

I have one in the blue and yellow warbonnet and one in Kodachrome. The blue and yellow are made anymore and you will have to search to find one.

Personal preference, I would take the Atlas over the Athearn anyday.

As always, thanks for the help.

I have a pair of of U36C's bot 3 years apart and they both are good performers. The second one came from trainworld for $37.00 + S&H.They weigh in at 19 oz and pull my 30 cars up a ?% grade without any problems. The oldest unit tops out at
130 MPH w/o cars and the second at 98 MPH w/o cars
Kadee recommends a # 38 and if too snug, install w/o lid.

Also, wanted to explain the GE'S model designation. The U stands for Universal, the 36 stands for the first two digits of the units 3600
Horsepower and the letter C indicated the Truck type "C" was Three Powered Axles.

Locomotive2---always good to review what designations mean.

For those of you who may have both styles, do you know what the model #s are. I would even settle for the cab #s. I want to be fairly sure that I get what I want when ordering. I want a Kodachrome and a B/Y bonnet so either getting the cab #s or product #s would help me be succesful. Thanks for the help and the recommendations---you have convinced me to order two instead of none! :D
