HI guys Looking at the ATSF logo i have on my locos this appear to be a blue cross in within a white background circle with the writing SantaFe in the midd of the cross Is this logo correct for the early 1960s? In modeling the early 1960's time period what logo shouls it be used for motive power and rolling stock? was the logo ever chanced? Thanks very much for your reply stefano
I concentrate so much on freight cars that the "blue logo" threw me. By the way, the big railroad emblem on rolling stock is usually called a HERALD. On rolling stock painting before 1960-- boxcars, reefers, stockcars, covered hoppers, I usually see the black and white herald-- a white circle over black corners, a black cross and white letters "Santa Fe" As I recall, the loco 2099 and the covered hoppers here were both painted from prototype photos, the loco did not have a herald. But I have seen blue and white heralds on zebra stripe ATSF locos in photos. I'll have to go look.
Hi Kennth thanks for your reply I think the logo/herald on the zebra stripes diesel is infact blue/white it seems correct all my zebra stripes loco have it stefano
Yes stefano all my pix of Santa Fe zebra stripes have the blue box w/ white cross. Even my zebra stripe decal sets have that herald. There was no herald on the pin stripe locos just "Santa Fe" in yellow on the long hood.
Well stefano after saying my loco pix all had blue herald boxes, checked my zebra stripe models & it's half & half blue & black herald boxes. So now the question is which is correct? But then the blue box ones are a very dark blue so maybe some of the model manufacturers have just used black.
Yes you are right strangely i also seen that on mine [atlas ho] have thae same blue/black logo infact the orizzontal part of the coss is blue while the vertical one is blue now from all the ATSF logo i have seen [not just few] i have never seen this lolgo in this format but always only blue on white I learnt that the atsf logo should be as i mentioned additionally a blue cross on yellow background was used on certain locomotives like the F type from 1964 to 1974 Who can explain this dilemma ?
I had another and better look at the ATSF zebra stripes diesels from ATLAS i have and i have to rectify the previous post description of the logo as ALCO RS-1 logo all BLUE EMD GP-7 logo all BLACK FM H16-44 logo all BLACK Are they both correct ? or which is the correct one ? Thanks very much for clarifing this to me
Yes, they are both correct. The black and blue Santa Fe heralds have been used intermittently. Both would be correct on the models you listed. The problem is we have black and white photos for most of our resources, therefore it all looks like black heralds. I believe the original heralds were blue and when the locomotives were shopped and repainted they came out black. Let's see if that holds up in the popular court of opinion. Grin!
With regard to the ATSF zebra stripes diesels locos i noticed the following changes in lettering a specific loco for exp. ALCO RS-1 ATSF FM H16-44 ATSF EMD GP-7 AT&SF what is the reason for this similar but different lettering ? Thanks again stefano
Wait until you bump into a shopped, AT&SF, Zebra Stripe, with dynamic brakes and the herald is on the short nose of a GP7u. I have an early Atlas, with a GP30 Kato drive mechanism, painted up in this scheme. I only wish I had more. Santa Fe paint scheme's varied depending on the manufacturer. Alco, EMD, Fair Banks Morris and others each delivered their version of an AT&SF Zebra paint scheme with varying heralds and locations. I'm trying to think of a good resource for you and what comes to mind is (memory is slipping). I need to go and pull my books out. How about this...you can look forward to more news, tomorrow. Or we can hope that our Santa Fe Pro's will jump in here to help you out.
Hi Rick thanks for the overview on the logo this is clear enough for me I was puzzled by the many different aspects of the logo ciao stefano
The resource is....(and the envelope please)... Santa Fe Railway Painting & Lettering Guide for Model Railroaders Volume 1 Rolling Stock, Compiled by Richard H. Hendrickson. 1990, Santa Fe Modelers Organization, Inc. Dallas, Texas. 65p. Organized survey of SF system practices in painting and lettering cars from 1910 to the time of publication. Many illustrations of cars and a chart of assignment of "Name Train" slogans and styles of system maps painted on box and refrigerator cars. Of course, books with period color photos would also be accurate...much more so than looking at one model has and what another model has.
If you're looking for a good color book of whole late 50's up though about 1972, I heartily recommend this one (Morning Sun): Santa Fe Trackside with Bill Gibson Lloyd E. Stagner Long time Santa Fe employee Bill Gibson carried his camera along and went out on his days off in the 1950s and 60s to record the goings-on with his beloved railroad. Trackside Book #10. That has more color zebra-stripe photography in it than anything else I've seen. It is organized by locomotive type, and many locomotives show multiple schemes.
