HI Guys I am a fun of the ATSF and i would like to model the early 1960's I have half of my diesels in ATSF Zebra stripes pain scheme and the other half in the pre-1972 blue/yellow paint scheme Would you find this combination of paint schemes in the early 1960"s? thanks very much for your reply stefano
HI Gator thanks for your reply Do you think the 2 different paint scheme combination could extent to 1963-64 ? thanks for your reply stefano
Stefano and of course everyone tuned in, You wrote: "Is it possible that the 2 paint schemes can extend to 1963-64?" Quickest answer is no. The actual time line escapes me. The following is how I remember it. The two paint schemes the AT&SF Zebra Stripe and Blue and Yellow Pin Stripe aka Book Ends, co-existed up until about 1962, perhaps some into 1963 and later. The first deliveries of SD 24's showed up in the Zebra Stripe Livery. The first deliveries of GP 20's and GP 30's wore the yellow pin stripe livery. Later deliveries of the SD24's arrived on the Santa Fe property in the blue and yellow pin stripe. A good portion of the GP 9's retained their Zebra Stripes loosing their stripes, when shopped or traded in for newer GP's. My granddad a locomotive engineer for Santa Fe, out of Barstow, Ca. Said he operated the Zebra Stripe GP's up until about 1960 - 61, and said that he operated some of the first locomotives delivered, in the blue livery, just before he retired in 1962. If you go back and re-visit the resources I shared with you it's more then likely you will find dated material to either confirm or deny the above. I hope that helps.
Stefano Don't worry too much about when Santa Fe locos got repainted from zebra to pin stripes. Have heard some locos especially switchers, lasted into the early '70s in zebra before being scrapped or rebuilt. But do have some pix of NWs & SWs in pin stripes in the mid to late '70s. And some switchers were rebuilt into SSB1200s in the early '80s w/ Warbonnet! See attachment.
Hi Cajon thanks for your imput and pic i am learning everyday a lot of informations thanks also to members with experience regards stefano
