Took these pictures while at work yesterday.

It is an intermodal train approx 1500 metres long (1 mile)

The locomotives are owned by Pacific National and are GE based on Dash 9's

Oh you may notice that I'm standing on the mainline, thats ok since the lines were closed for track maintenance, the reason I was at work in the first place :D

Very impressive, Paul [IMG] Good to see some railway photographs from your new camera at last ;)

Looks like the containers are 20ft and 40ft, do you have larger ones on trains there? We only have 20 and 40ft here.

Mostly 20 and 40, but I have been seeing 48' FCL containers on the roads in Sydney. I've heard that 45' containers have been spotted in Europe latley. I am on the look out for international 45' containers in OZ, but so far haven't seen any...

We're starting to get international 45' containers appear in greater numbers over here, they are rare on the rails as most traditional container flats over here were set up for 3x20' or 40'+20', but some of the newer wagon designs have cured that. A quick trip along the Cambridge - Felixstowe main road will net you a bunch if you are a container fan!

There are also European domestic 45's (well they are 13.6m long by 2.5m wide metric, not quite the same as ISO boxes.) The box that Bachmann have modelled for their OO guage multifret intermodal wagon is one of these Euro-45's, they are quite different looking from the ISO boxes, they have shallow corrugations as they are not designed to stack as high, plus a deep horizontal strengthening beam at the bottom to allow them to be bottom-lifted by piggypackers. (There are also Euro-40's with similar features BTW)

A couple of pics of the 45's from Matt Hannes site:

The ECS and P&O schemes have been done by Bachmann already in OO, and they have made a rather fine job of them! [IMG]

These things are pretty common on channel tunnel services, and some domestic UK services.

Yes Martyn, I travel the A14 fairly frequently and see quite a lot of 45 footers these days.
