So I'm starting get into the scenery mode with my layout. You may have seen this in another topic but this is what I've go so far. There will be additional trackage in the middle for industries.

Due to size constraints it's only 3' x 5.5' so I try to squeeze things in. After staring at it for a while and hypothesizing what can be done (there'll be a tunnel on the right corner) I realized there are a lot of "danger" spots.

Specifically, the raised tracks. There's not much real estate on the right of way of the raised tracks. This being a portable layout, a small bump could send trains off the edge crashing down on to the layout. Now rolling stock is fairly light and trucks/couplers are easy to replace but the locos! I'm going to build rock/berm sides to cover the risers/inclines and was thinking to build them up higher to form a 1/2" or so edge all around the raised areas, to protect spillage if someone bumps the layout. However, that would make it look like the trains are running inside a ditch.

Any suggestions? Tall trees? Do note that some of the lower tracks are close to the risers so I have little room to add tall trees, etc. A lot of this is in the area on the far side so you can't see this in the photo. You do see a little of the lower track on the far inside just below the risers.

    Off the cuff:
    1. I would put rock walls on those risers. Maybe you can do rack walls and have them come slightly high for a railing sort of look.

    2. Or else put some fence up there. Put lots of undergrowth so that the undergrwoth is all around the tracks and trains will fall on plants.

I wouldn't worry too much baout fall sfrom those heights but still I see your concern.
