    Another great Shorpy pic,

this picture is amazing, Denver and Rio Grande 723 steaming over dual guage track, through the Royal Gorge DRGW bridge, way before the tourist bridge was built:

Caption says it is RGS 723, but I can t fathom that is correct and can't find reference to RGS power in the 700 series.

Probably a D&RGW locomotive. Did RGS have Standard gauge stuff?

Hmm. Why would an RGS loco be in Royal Gorge? That is an older photo. Old headlight style. Look at the coupler setup on that pilot. Looks like link and pin style. Probably a former D&RG RR 4-6-0.

That was my first thought, but the D&RG did own the RGS.

A few minutes of digging, and I do find that it is a D&RG loco. #723 so-called "170 Class" 4-6-0, Brooks 1899, to D&RGW Class T-28 (same number) in 1924. Scrapped a couple of years later.

That is quite the interesting (and cool) photograph. It's always interesting to see the Gorge pre-bridge.

Shorpy has some terrific photos, and that is one of them. On the "hanging bridge." That has been there for a long time. Anyone know when it was built?
