Bashed AZL GP7's in CNW scheme. Units are not quite complete - still need to make winterization hatches, operational Pyle/Barrel lamp. Units received BLMA and scratch details. Custom decals by RailGraphics; Microscale numbers and logos. I'm not sure if the chevrons will fit the MTL GP9, due to width, but probably could be modified.

Welcome to Trainboard, Uncle Nugat. The pilot and the details look great. How did you make the exhaust and the pilot.

    Thanks John and Robert.

John, the stacks are stock AZL as well as the pilot -- just glued in place and decaled.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciated your comments!

I'm posting a few others pics since we had some sunshine today. You'll be able to get a better view of #1556 torpedo tube and piping. I also modified a set of skirts, for these, for later service.

Really nice work! These are on long to do list, hopefully they'll turn out as well as yours. (If I can ever manage to finish one.)

Also noticed the IL flag in your header, live in IL? If so, and you don't mind, where?

    Hi Paul,

I have a set of decals enough to decorate three units. I can also give you the Microscale ID's for logo and numbers -- let me know.

Yes, Illinois, I live in the western suburbs -- Downers Grove to be exact.

Back at ya, "How does 'BUCKY' fit into the picture?"

    GP in Z

    Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum, hope to be allowed to post a question: I am considering to scratch build a loco on the basis of GP7 or GP9. Where could I find the dimensions (notably the distance between axis within a truck, distance between two trucks)? What is the width of inside of the shells? Is the MTL loco indeed wider?
And where could I find pictures of both models with the shell taken off? I need to find out whethers the interior (motor) wider at the cabin?

    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,

Welcome! You should, probably, post this under a "new thread"; you'd get greater visibility to your query. However, David K. Smith has pretty much done all the "Leg Work" for you. He's a wonderful modeler and this should answer your questions -- a great read so check this out: http://jamesriverbranch.net/review_1.htm

    Welcome Matt

The AZL and MTL loco's use an 8mm motor. The main difference is not in the chassis width but in how the shell is modeled as it passes over the motor. AZL uses an etched piece of brass as the body panel that passes over the motor while MTL makes the body width consistent down it full length and the molded plastic shell fits over that. The AZL shell is a bit narrower ahead and behind the motor where the plastic body fits down over the shell and the brass panel fits over the motor a the 8mm width. Sorry I don't have a picture of the AZL chassis and shell to show but here is picture of the two variations of the MTL GP chassis. This different approach to the shell being built as a composite allows for a narrow cowl on the AZL GP locomotive.
