For those who own one of these, I have a question- On the steam dome, is a whistle. In front of that, is a purposeless tube sticking up. I have looked at mine, and at pictures on the 'Net, and they all seem to be this way. Why? What does that tube represent? On the prototype, there could be a whistle, and also there should be a safety or "pop" valve. But there is no valve atop this tube. Anyone have some ideas what Bachmann intended? Boxcab E50
Just pulled up this site...http://home.onemain.com/~thebackshop/Shay.htm...the pic(2nd down) with the "Backshop Parts" arrangement shows a pop valve at that location...different than the "stock" engine. I figure they're trying to test your craftsman abilities and your research skills, but Backshop (no connection by blood or money) will sell a lover of precision like yourself, the appropriate part for a pittance...Or, I could be TOTALLY Wrong !!! Well, I take it you FINALLY got the Shay Do you love it? I don't have one for the layout (yet) but if it runs like the Climax or 2-6-0s it must be great. As to the "tube" not real sure. I have similar tubes atop generators on some of the 2-6-0 models so that may be it. Anyway, I expect full details and a review of the model soon Railroad On!
