What are the VISIBLE differences between a GP40, GP40-2, and GP38? I have an Atlas GP40 (low nose) painted in conrail that I'd like to paint into a Norfolk Southern engine. Too my knowledge, NS doesn't have any low nose GP40s. I have seen some GP38s and GP40-2 in NS that are low nose. Which one does the GP40 most resemble?
The Fans on Top? Does this help? Two with the same road name: GP40-? From: http://usloki.tripod.com/EMDGP40.htm GP38-? From: http://usloki.tripod.com/ Note I'd like to thank the owner of this site. It has helped me extensively.
Actualy - I can't tell. I did some extensive "Image Googling" GP40-2 http://faculty.simpson.edu/RITS/www/equipment/dieselpix/rrockgp40-2.jpg Edit Er: I mean I can't tell. You can try here: http://www.drgw.org/data/ There are pages of rosters. Some of the numbers have links to pictures. Also try going to "Google Images" and search on "gp40" Have fun.
The big difference between the GP38 and the GP40 is the number of rear fans. The 38 has two and the 40 has three and the 40 is a bit longer. Both the 38 and the 40 were later offered as -2's. The dash two models were basically an upgrade to solid state surface mount electronics. The main spotting difference is that dash 2's have an angular rear roof where the non dash had a straight one and the rear sight glass on the engineers side of the long hood.
Well depends on your definition of a rivit counter. To me the differences between a non dash and a dash 2 are glareing, but then again the new Life Like GP38-2's look so wrong to me that I probably won't buy anymore. Most people that run trains and don't detail and custom paint don't know the difference. If it doesn't bother you, go for it. There are worse offenses in this hobby like not running trains.:shade:
To re-iterate my point, here is a set of Rock Island units I did for a good friend of mine. He handed me two undec Atlas GP38's. Any Rock Island modeller worth his salt knows the Rock had GP38-2's. This guy did not care, his point was "Who will really notice when I run them at N-Trak shows?" The only person it bugs is me:shade: , but this customer is happy.
