I want to give my Son his first setup for Christmas and am thinking about starting him with the basics for the Black River Junction layout using Unitrack that we can build out over time. Does anyone know the specific Kato part numbers and track counts. I have the diagram but am unsure on the radius etc.

I would aslo welcome any other suggestions for a layout that my son can grow into.

    Thanks

    Welcome at TrainBoard, Curtisblow.

I'm not familiar with Kato track.
How old is your son? You can start with a loop and a siding / spur.
BTW, I like the in January Model Railroader published Beer Line. But I guess it's too big for you???

That should take care of it -- I almost did this one in N scale, And its a very capable layout. You can get other ideas from katousa.com and click on their 'unitrack' section.

Thanks but how do I decipher the numbers in the Kato track plan. I am wondering what type of turnouts they use. In the diagram the have an 860, 850, 851 and and 861 and various other figures for track. Is there anyway to match those figures up with Katos SKU's?

    My Son will be 7.

    Thanks again.

HO-Gauge UNITRACK - KATO USA : Precision Railroad Models

The above link will show you what each # represents. If you email kato, they should be able to provide you with a list of the required pieces.

The above, has a 'track pack' for the layout in question. To do the whole thing would be around 855, as listed. Another note, kato normally does NOT discount track 'packs' vs buying each piece individually, but you may find that you won't have any random 'leftovers' (as most of their track only comes in packs of 2 or 4.)

Is this the same layout that Model Railroader did as a 4 or 5 part series last winter?

    Jeff

edit: I just checked and starting in Jan 2007 MR did a set of articles about building this layout.

I think that they listed everything needed with the catalog numbers.

    Curtis --

Please let us know the progress and any stumbling blocks you hit -- I'm getting ready to build a plan very similar to this i believe.
