I found some old photos I took of the BN SD60MAC demos that were testing on NS in 1993!

It was getting near dark, and there were a bunch of other railfans trackside snapping photos. The train was going by at a pretty good clip:

The head end of the train was unique: 3 locos and a EMD test car in between each loco!

Did these units survive and go on to BNSF or were they returned to EMD?

Yes, they survived into BNSF, but they were retired to a Colorado testing facility sometime in mid-1998 I believe.

I happened to bring a book along for my trip: EMD's SD60 Series. The very last page of the book has a foldout drawing of the BN SD60MAC. I did not realize that the SD60MAC was longer than the other SD60's. According to the drawings, a straight SD60 & SD60M were 67'5", while the SD60MAC's were 69'10".

Just as SD70MACs are longer than standard SD70's, the 60MACs were longer than standard 60s. You can see the extra length behind the grills at the rear of the long hood. I don't remember what the extra length was for, but it was something about the AC that caused it.

Thanks, Bretski. I had not thought about the SD70's

The "Inverter" for the rear, or second truck is located in the rear. Hence the extra length.
