BNSF 573, a B40-8W was repainted last September, was repainted with a fresh coat of red and silver Warbonnet!

Supposedly BNSF has sold these locomotives (B40-8Ws) to some lease company, and is leasing them! Don't ask me why.

As far as I know, Santa Fe bought these engines, they didn't lease them.

The lease companies prefer the engines to stay in Warbonnet, so it looks like BNSF 580, the only B40-8W in Heritage 2, might be the only one for a long time.

As BNSF repaints more of these engines, they will most likely get a fresh coat of red and silver.

BNSF 822, the only C40-8W in Heritage 2, was repainted the same month, but it is not on lease, so it got orange and green.

I think it is great that the Warbonnet will live on for a while longer. Beautiful paint scheme!

See the BNSF Section in Extra 2200 South, and a picture in the current issue of Diesel Era.

Part of the B40-8W order was leased from the start. When 573 came due for repaint, the leasing company that owns it checked for quotes on repainting, and since the Warbonnet is cheaper, it got that scheme; it wasn't a matter of leasing company "preference", but economics...leasing companies can be cheap! [IMG] I saw 573 come through Fullerton recently, and it looked good; sorry, no pics, since BNSF trains usually move quickly through there, and all you'll get is a blur! [IMG] That, and light conditions aren't really favorable there. Even a railfanning buddy of mine who's a professional photographer rarely messes with trying to get pics there.

I have several pictures from Fullerton that are all great. You just have to know the correct locations!

If you refer to the current issue of Extra 2200 South, you will see that the BNSF Section includes a little about this unit. It notes the fact that the cost was about the same for Warbonnet and Heritage 2.

It also says that the leasing company prefers the engines stay in their original scheme, whatever it be.

About the only location at Fullerton worth taking shots at are from the pedestrian overpass; most other angles from the platform aren't very good because of light depending on time of day, and obstacles that can get in the shots (the palm trees, the pedestrian fence between the tracks, people, etc.) Decent shots can be had towards the end of the platform, but that's too close to the off-limits area, and Fullerton PD is serious about enforcing this. As for BNSF 573 and 580, I've read both X2200 and DE, but they didn't explain a whole lot. Supposedly, the H2 scheme costs a bit more to apply than a warbonnet; looking at all those stripes that have to be applied, I can believe it! I wouldn't doubt the lease company wanting to save a few bucks and have the 573 painted in warbonnet. Whatever the whole story is, the 500-class is getting pretty ratty looking, and should be going through the paint booth soon. It should be interesting to see how others get painted.

This one was getting VERY ratty looking in February 1998 [IMG] Photographed in Bakersfield, during a crew change. It was not the only one we saw in this condition!

Yikes! A nice pic of a ratty engine. [IMG] I wonder if Espee had their hands on it for awhile? [IMG] Sad to say it, but a lot of the 500-class units I've seen are just as bad as this.

I've seen some of the Dash 8's look just as bad. Not very "Santa Fe" of them to get that way. I too heard it was bad paint, VMV in Paducha, KY. (Home of the IC/ICG Paducha Rebuilds) did the paint on these under warranty. Ever see an IC/ICG GP10 "Rattler"? The Paint didn't last very long on them either! [IMG] Many SF units did go back for a free repaint.

I will check but i think the reason for the 580 being painted up bnsf H2 is because it was wrecked and needed to be painted and the H2's were going through the paint shop at the time so it got H2'd also. But it does look nice.
