The more I think about it, the more I am inclined to backdating my era to just before the formation of BNSF.

A lot of my locomotives are in Santa Fe colours, but I do have several blue and yellow units sub-lettered for BNSF. Reverting to pure Santa Fe on these would be fairly easy, but I also have a C44, a GP35, and an SD40-2 snoot in H1 and a C44 in H2.

I love the Red and Silver superfleet scheme, also blue and yellow warbonnet, so may repaint the BNSF ones into these colours. Only a few freightcars would need repaints.

    Think I should go ahead?

It's amazing how our modelling tastes change over the years. I am already planning long term of a new layout. I say go for it Alan, wouldnt your spine cars be too modern for your era? I think you should send them all too me :D

Were it me, I'd backdate. Santa Fe had lots of great motive power, and ran stacks and piggyback trains like no one's business. BN was more the bulk hauler- coal, grain and the like.

You wouldn't go wrong returning the blue & yellow, and even the "Fleet" colors would look nice.

    Go for it Alan!

    Alan:

If you think you should, you probably should. If nothing else, it'll give you an excuse to add yet more to the locos (if you can), besides which, the fact that you're thinking about it probably means you want to.

The other side is, it's an easy backdate, and if you decide midway that you don't really want to do it, there's really nothing lost, since BNSF is big enough that repainting/lettering is a long process and units in "Fallen Flag" paint jobs really aren't an anachronism.

If you do back date Alan let me know I'll happily take all of the bnsf you don't want.I know what you are going through though.I have often thought of going BN but then I see the BNSF stuff and quickly forget about it.

Well, Alan, I too got caught up in the chase of keeping with a modern prototype. When BNSF started painting like crazy, I decided to lock my era at the "turn of the century." That way I can have rosters of LMX, ATSF, BNSF, and BN paint jobs (not to mention UP, SP, Cotton Belt, Rio Grande and even Chicago Northwestern on the UP line). The other reason, is that the area of Cajon Pass that I'm modeling (Summit to Lugo) is getting housing tracts built on the ridge tops. :(

Go for it Alan. I was in a similar situation. I have some BN, BNSF, and a whole bunch of ATSF locomotives and had planned on modeling BNSF.

After working for the BNSF for three and a half years I have no desire to model any of their stuff. Santa Fe was a class act and thats what I grew up with. Right now I am concentrating on detailing all of my ATSF power to prototype photos. I am also hoping to build a model of every Santa Fe diesel that was on the roster in the 10 year period of 1985-1995. So far I have kitbashed an SD-75M, GP-60M, SDFP45, and am working on an SD-39, GP39-2, and SF-30C.

I plan on keeping my BNSF stuff as I may want to take photos of the modern "scene" on my layout at some point.

Your spine cars would be in the correct era. Does this mean we can expect some Santa Fe 10 Pack Fuel Foilers and Impack spines in the near future?

    NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't do it!!!!

Sorry, that was my alter ego talking, I have thought of doing the same. It would be nice to turn in my fleet of Dash-9s for for some SD45's, SD40's and C30-7's, but the cost would be prohibitive and I would miss the all the different schemes I now have. Long live the Yellow&Blue and Green&Black, but now they just carry alittle sub-lettering. Plus, for a guy who does not have a layout, doing patch jobs makes for a nice 2-3 month project and who says I have to retire my aging fleet of locos???

Thanks for the input guys [IMG] I will backdate, but not too far, as I love my C44's, so they will revert to Red and Silver! I will do some studying to see if there are any locomotive types I could now have on the roster, which had just been retired or sold.

I may also run different periods, just remove the newer stuff, and add some older stuff, most of the others in the middle would do both eras [IMG]

And yes, Brian, the fuel-foilers and impack cars are in the pipeline, although not sure of the near future!

Yes! This from a slightly biased BNSF free zone.

Well, Alan, that is exactly what I did.

I was buying everything I could get my hands on there for a while, then decided on the road: Santa fe (love them Warbonnets!), then the era (just read my 'sig' below).

    Life is much simpler now.

I still have some BNSF items to sell or trade away, if any of you wanna put your money where your typing fingers are. :D [IMG]
