Another gem added to my library! I read one chapter about the Moffat Tunnel last night, and while not as exhaustive in detail as the Bauer/Bollinger Moffat Road book, it did offer some interesting insights as to the background of the Tunnel commission, and its predecessors. I'll offer more of a review as I get thru the book. It's quite large and lengthy!

I have about 90% of those, with a few exceptions. One I would encourange any Grande fan, and any CZ fan to add to thair library is [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Portrait-silver-lady-called-California/dp/0871085097/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237863251&sr=1-1.A"]Amazon.com: Portrait of a silver lady: The train they called the California Zephyr: Bruce A MacGregor: Books[/ame] must-have!Rio Grande Secret Places V1 is also a good volume to own.The Moffat Route nuts like myself would need to have [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Moffat-Road-Frederick-T-Bollinger/dp/080400207X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1237863361&sr=1-1"]Amazon.com: The Moffat Road: Frederick T Bollinger, Frederick Bauer: Books[/ame]. Please show us more,it's never boring or is it time to start a 'show your book collection" thread? :)

The Moffat Road is a book specializing on the early days of the DNW&P/D&SL.
I should post a review, as I cannot find one I thought I made!;)

anyone have Rio Grande in Color Volume 4? I saw this is out but don't know what the content is. I have volumes 1-3 and they are very nice. Volume 3 is more 1940's thru 1970 so covers less of my modeling era (very nice still).

The thing to remember is that the author was a professional historian trained in the use of documentary evidence. The account he gives of the Rio Grande's history is based on his exhaustive research in the railroad's archives as well as other local sources, including court records, depositions, committee reports, and tons of other stuff that amateur historians would be hard-pressed to interpret correctly. What's especially neat about the book is the railroad's totally hands-off attitude editorially; they commissioned Athearn to write the book, opened up the company's files to him without restriction, and refrained from pressuring him in any way. I think this alone speaks for the exceptionally high quality of Rio Grande's management back in those days. --Bryan

There are a few newer books to be aware of:

Crest of the Rockies (looks like a lovely book but high price tag at $70+)
Rio Grande in Color volumes 4 and 5

As others have mentioned, portrait of a Silver Lady looks good. I have the BLI California Zephyr so I look forward to getting that book some day.

Do you have a copy of Crest of the Rockies, Jim?
I think I saw it advertised in The Prospector.

Paid a bit over $80 for my signed copy.
Yeah, costly, but WELL worth it! IMHO.

No. I did see it at the Timonium train show last time I went to Baltimore in the spring. It looks awesome but so far it isn't in the budget. I usually like to thrumb through a book before I buy - I hate to buy a book unseen. The books at the show were sealed. I don't doubt it is a gem though.

I think it was RG in Color Vol 5 which is mostly a 1980's book that I could use a copy of also. Budget is tight these days after a couple years of unemployment or underemployment and DC metro cost of living is very expensive.
