Any recommendations for someone looking to start his collection of Santa Fe rolling stock? Looking for color photos from the late 60s -80's timeframe.

There was one in the yellow forum, but it was snatched up before I could do research on it :(

    Mike,

I have no idea about the book, but there is a website, www.qstation.org, that has many links to ATSF history, rosters, buildings, layouts, etc. I've used it numerous times, and it may be a good resource for you also.

For COLOR and for TIMEFRAME late 60s-80s, I suppose the Morning Sun Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment is a good place to start.

My own most-frequently consulted books are

Caboose Cars of the Santa Fe Railway Frank M. Ellington. 1978,
Railroad Car Press, Colfax, Iowa. 100 p.
Photos, rosters, history and scale drawings of cabooses, drover
cabooses, coach/baggage/caboose combines and transfer cabooses.

Listing of Freight Cars by Class and Car Number 1906-1991 compiled by Larry Occhiello. Santa Fe Modelers Organization, Inc., Norman, Ok. and Santa Fe Railway Historical Society Inc., Long Beach, Cal.
Organized by car classes (BX-3 box cars, for instance) gives the
number of extant cars in each number series at 2 to 3 year
intervals through the century. Also includes an "all-time"
(within the 20th century) index of car numbers so that with any
known car number, such as one spotted in a photograph, one can
look up the car class and identify the car and trace its history.
Conversely, one can check how many class FT-G 40 foot flatcars out
of the 1044 built in 1905-6 were still in revenue service in 1956
and converted with racks for pulpwood service-- only 14, down from 145 FT-G pulpwood cars three years earlier.

Refrigerator Cars: Ice Bunker Cars 1884-1979 (Santa Fe Railway Rolling Stock Reference Series- Vol.2) C. Keith Jordan, Richard H. Hendrickson, John B. Moore and A. Dean Hale. 1994, Santa Fe Modelers Organization Inc., Norman, Ok. 288p.
Photos, scale drawings, history, operations. Also covers company
service ice cars, salt cars for transporting ice used in
refrigeration, and former reefers in brick car service.

Santa Fe Boxcars 1869-1953 (Santa Fe Railway Rolling Stock Reference
Series- Vol.4) John C. Dobyne III, 2001, Santa Fe Railway Historical
& Modeling Society, Inc. Derby, KS.258p.
History of development of ATSF boxcars built over this time
period, and modifications and conversions made at a later date of
    boxcars built within the period.

Santa Fe Diesels and Cars 1974, Wayner Publications, New York. 79p.
Black and white photos of most of the diesels Santa Fe operated
up to the time, the 2 largest but entirely untypical motor cars,
a fair sampling of passenger cars from wood to high-levels,
and a cursory look at freight cars (such as photos of 4 box cars
to illustrate the variety in Santa Fe's 200 classes of box cars).
Still lots of interesting pictures, including some modelable
    projects.

Santa Fe in the Lone Star State Vol.1 1949-1969, Steve Allen Goen,
2000, Four Ways West Publishing. all-color coverage of Texas ATSF.
I believe there was to be a Vol.2 covering later years.

Santa Fe Railway Painting & Lettering Guide for Model Railroaders
Volume 1 Rolling Stock, Compiled by Richard H. Hendrickson. 1990, Santa Fe Modelers Organization, Inc. Dallas, Texas. 65p.
Organized survey of SF system practices in painting and lettering
cars from 1910 to the time of publication. Many illustrations
of cars and a chart of assignment of "Name Train" slogans and styles of system maps painted on box and refrigerator cars.
(There may be a newer printing of this book out...)

Stock Cars of the Santa Fe Railway, Frank M. Ellington, John Berry, and Loren Martens. Originally published by Railroad Car Press. 1986 second printing by Santa Fe Railway Historical Society, Inc. Los Angeles, Cal. 134p.
Class by class survey of Santa Fe stockcars, narrative history,
scale drawings, photographs, stock operations. Photos, scale
drawings and narrative of SF stockyards and stock chutes, plus
station-by-station listing of all stock handling facilities on
the Santa Fe system with the carload capacity of each stockyard,
from Santa Fe "List of Officers, Agents, Stations, 1961".

Work Equipment Cars (Santa Fe Railway Rolling Stock Reference Series- Volume 1) W. W. Childers. 1993, Santa Fe Modelers Organization, Inc.
    Norman, Ok. 254 p.

However, my era is mid-1950s. Some of these books are available from Santa Fe Rwy Historical and Modelers Association, www.atsfrr.org Then clickmon Company Store.

I bought Volume 1, but I think Volume 2 is the one I need timeframe is too early - plus the rolling stock one. SO if anyone is looking to buy Vol 1, shoot me a PM.
