Does anyone know of the best matching black paint to use in order to match the black paint on an Atlas factory painted Norfolk Southern loco? I used some testors flat black and it turned out to be quite glossy looking, not flat at all, and really not a good match at all to the locomotive factory paint job.
If you don't get a response here you might want to shoot Cory Rothlisberger on the Atlas forum an email and ask him (although you probably already knew that! ).
Since factory-painted models don't use commercially available paints, there generally isn't a paint that will be a 100% match. Best advice is to experiment with different brands, and/or clear overcoats (gloss, satin, flat) to find one that best matches the factory finish. That, and the paint delivery method can effect the final appearance; paint applied with a paintbrush will look different compared to paint applied with an airbrush.
Southern Rail Fan, I went to the train room and checked to see what paints I have. Keep in mind I haven't used this on any of my NS diesels but I do have Polly Scale Engine Black on hand. I'll paint some plastic tonight and see how close it matches the engines color.
I'll just say that this will be tough, since Atlas' NS locos have been both very flat and "moderately" flat black. I've generally found that you should touch up with a flat paint if you intend to dullcoat the final surface to a flat finish or a semi-flat like ModelFlex if you intend to make the final semi-gloss/flat. I would just use the stuff you have on hand, and then weather the engine. Dullcote first, then chalks, drybrush, and such to make 'er dirty!
Not to be a smart-a**, but a lovely shade of...well...black...might work. Polly S works fine with a bit of weatering to cover it up. Being an alumnus of Norfolk Southern, I can assure you that the black paint covers all the dirt...BUT IT'S THERE.:shade: Greg
