I am considering purchasing my first Brass Loco, and am wondering which of the more popular brands are the best runners. I have heard that some brass loco's, while looking very good, perform poorly and since my loco's all get put to work, I want to be sure and get one that runs well. Any info would be appreciated.
Chesapeakenscaler, welcome to TrainBoard Earlier this year, we were at an NMRA meet here in England, and two N scale brass diesels (Overland P40's) were pulling a train, but failed miserably to put up any kind of reasonable performance, and were replaced by a pair of Kato's. As is to be expected, superb running ensued But they do look beautiful ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery
I avoid Brass Loco's like the Plague! Look great, but I've never seen one run better than a un-tuned Bachmann for $30.00. Too much money for something that runs fair at best. What were you planning on getting? ------------------ Brent Tidaback, Member #234 BNSF Railfan-to-the Max and a N-Scaler to boot! "Ship it on the Route of The Roadrunners!" Seems I may just haave to wait for the Kato units to come out.
I have an OMI SD90 that runs like high-grade manure. I also have some newer OMI SD units that run better. Now I understand the OMI AC units run much better because they use an electrical pickup similar to the ones used by Kato. ------------------ Keep on Track'N at www.phcomputing.com Harold Riley
I had 6 OMI N locomotives. They did not run smoothly as Atlas and Kato. . The front couplers could not be used because they were to close to the body of the locomotive. Of a couple there was a disturbing noise coming from the gears 2 P40 (that i sold to a chap in the UK ) could not pull the coaches on a grade of 1.5%!! My honest opinion is that they are not worth the money they ask for it. ------------------ Paul the 2nd Paul Van Herwegen HO Rappannahock Terminal Railway G Emerald Valley RR http://users.pandora.be/paul.van.herwegen/
Paul the 2nd, I wonder if they were the P40's we saw? ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery
Alan, I suppose we can say it's for 95% possible ------------------ Paul the 2nd Paul Van Herwegen HO Rappannahock Terminal Railway G Emerald Valley RR http://users.pandora.be/paul.van.herwegen/
Thanks for all the input folks. It seems that I may be better off staying away from the brass loco's. I just can't help but wonder why one of the brass mfg's doesn't start out with a Kato or Atlas chassis? I wonder how many B23-7's I can get for the price of a brass loco?
