My layout (mid-1950s) will include a brewery and a pork packing plant.

    1) This brewery ships bottle and keg beer. I don't believe this product needs to be cold, but I believe it needs to be protected from the extreme temperatures while in transit. Would it be shipped in reefers, boxcars, insulated boxcars or what?

    2) The pork packing plant pickles some of the meat. In what cars would they ship this product?

Any help would be appreciated. Buzz

Hi Buzz, Mid 50's, " box car", I know the cars were lined inside so I'll asume they were insulated. I was in my teens then and remember the proceedures in my local area fairly well. A trucker had a contract to deliver the beer to the Liquor commission ( political ). He just backed up to the boxcar, they loaded the truck ( 3 ton stake truck ) and hauled it away. When they got thirsty, they opened a case, broke the neck off the bottle and saved the pieces to charge for breakage. The RR was Canadian National at that time, location Maritimes. Hope it's of some help to you.

Sorry don't know much about pork for that time, a lot of meat was sold directly from the farmer to the wholesaler but we could purchase local or imported meat. During the 70's my brother inlaw had a pig farm all pigs were shipped to a slaughter house the carcases were shipped to meat packers not positive on the last.
