I was thinking of adding a construction site to my planned layout. Can anyone suggest what size Evergreen Styrene H Columns I should use for, say, an 8 story "skyscraper" framework?

    Thanks for any help.

No idea, but just wanted to say this is a great idea! You’ll get a structure for your layout pretty cheaply I bet, especially at the back of the layout. Some evergreen for beams, some sort of privacy fence around the construction site, maybe a truck or crane visible around the site.

There are so many variables, and it has been a long time since I studied this, but I can make a suggestion.

I assume that you are just providing the lowest level of columns since you didn't mention beam size.

I suggest that you use the #284 H-column at 0.125"x0.116" and don't tell anyone how tall the building will be. Don't make them more than two stories tall; mount them on a "concrete" footing to represent the top of the piling.

If you want to include framing, you'll have to find someone who has been to school more recently.

I see this is a more complicated topic that I thought. Maybe I'll use the H-columns as flat/gondola loads LOL.

My go to for all these years has been the .060, .080, and .100 both in H columns and in I beams. And Plastruct has girders in both HO and N scale.

And use these in N scale for the floor supports.

There is a structure under construction available by a dealer that does not advertise with Trainboard.

That's a nice looking building . . . but. They have a tendency to use square structural members instead of W- or H- beams. It really costs too much to have to replace the verticals with Evergreen structural members. Their N scale vertical lift bridge is even more glaring.

    Perhaps as background models . . .
