Does anyone know what licensing costs from UP? I would like to make some signs, starting with "No Trespassing" signs in D&RGW, using a vinyl sheet cutter, and aluminum stock.

What does sturdy aluminum sheet go for these days, and how do I cut it (not a hacksaw) to have square corners, and straight edges? I mean professional quality.

I guess I could mount the signs to plywood, but wouldn't look as good, IMHO.

I have been wanting to build signs like this for a while now.
What advice would you home business owners give me?

For the UP part, you're going to have to contact them for the numbers.

You can buy aluminum sheared to your dimensions from a sheet metal seller, should not be overly expensive if you buy enough. Go talk to them to see what size parent sheets they can shear with little or no waste. You can buy 12x12 sheets (& larger) from McMaster-Carr, but then you have to cut it somehow.

Are you thinking of selling these at a profit? Or is this for fun?

Do you have a business set up already? If not, and you approach UP as an individual, they might be less inclined to consider your request.

This sounds like something different from the caps, mugs, and T shirts most likely ask about. But, I do wonder when it comes to "No Trespassing" if with security...?

I haven't set anything up, I'm just doing some homework.

My wife wants to start a home business, doing computer slide shows at funerals, etc. We could integrate the business, and call it someting "official".
The signs are just a starting point. I would like to make depot-style signs, mileposts signs, etc A No Trespassing sign is on the wall in Mike Danneman's layout room, and I want one like it. The real deal D&RGW signs are all gone, painted-out, obliterated or what have you. I also know a few fans here on TB would like one.

If I didn't make it a business, so to speak; "trade" for stuff, rather than cash payment and some have done (Pray59 comes to mind as doing such), would it fall under the same licensing? For profit? Maybe in the future, this is just for me, for fun, for now.

I would like to make depot and station signs, to decorate the layout room.

I could call the local metal suppliers in GF and see what sheet aluminum costs, sheared in the sizes needed. Does it come painted, or only bare? I'm not so good with a rattle can.
On the other hand, a vinyl sheet for color would work well too.
