I've ordered a Micro-Trains bay window caboose in Conrail paint and lettering; i asked my dealer if there was a prototype for these since i thought Conrail didn't have these without extra windows on both sides; only the bay area has windows on this model. The dealer told me that Conrail purchased 13 of these prototypes from the Southern Railway, so i guess that's why MTL has offered one in this scheme. My question is: can anyone of you Conrail experts tell me if the above explanation is accurate? Please respond, thanks in advance, berkmeister.
berkmeister, Hello ! As an old Conrail guy (Western Pa), can't say I know about these cabins (thought a C-50-9 was a GE Loco !!). Did dig up a possible source of info for you; http://crcaboose.railfan.net/index.htm ...hope it's a help. Bob C.
The model is a Southern Pacific prototype and is not prototypical to Conrail. The bay window cabooses that Conrail acquired from the Southern have a different roof and bay window design, and the sides have plated windows as opposed to no evidence of any windows. Photos of the CR ex-SOU bays can be seen at: http://www.hebners.net/cr/crN5H.html
There is a bay window CR caboose in the CSX yard near my house. It is still in conrail paint and not restensiled. Altough I want badly to get a photo before it disapears (forever), I can't get a picture from public property.
