I've seen them with either 2- or 3-axle rear trucks... whats the difference?

I believe the A-1-A version had a steam generator and was ordered mostly (or even exclusively) by CNR.

The LL C-Liner (now being reissued in DCC-friendly form) was (is) a great engine. The older LL FA-1, FA-2, Erie-Built and C-Liner all used the same split-frame architecture, and are smooth runners and strong pullers. I've converted many to DCC. You have to mill the A-units; a small decoder fits in the B-units were the cabs would be.

The first C-Liner and Erie-Built runs seems to have been quite limited. I'm excited the C-Liners are coming again, but will have to pass, as I am on a limited budget for the next year or so.

The steam generator for passenger service was available with the 2000 and 2400 HP but not the 1600 HP model. Long Island RR, New Haven and New York Central had passenger models with the 6 wheel A-1-A truck.

Ok, so the 3-axle rear truck locos had steam genetartors? And the 2-axle did not?

Yup, that was it. The Kalmbash Diesel Encylopedia book said the passenger model was not available with 1600 HP but the Second Diesel Spotter's Guide shows 12 were built for CN, 6 A's and 6 B's.

Edit: Ops, I was reading the number of cylinders column not number sold.:embarassed:

    Yes.

My just-found Diesel Spotters Guide clarifies matters.

F-M sold 69 B-B units to the US, no steam generators. They sold 54 B-B units to Canada w/o steam generator, and 18 B-B units with generators. These were 1600 or 2000 hp units.

    Of the B-A1A units, F-M sold 30 to US railroads (2000 & 2400 hp) and 12 (6 A-B units) to CN. all 1600 hp.

That's 165 units in all. 18 of the B-B units had steam generators, all in Canada. All of the B-AiA units had steam generators.
