I don't know if this link to the C&NWHS's Facebook page will work for some or all, but it's the soundtrack of a C&NW radio ad from the late '60s. There were several ads during the era and I remember hearing these on WGN as my Dad got ready for work. Quite progressive for a railroad to advertise its commuter trains and the C&NW's were worth advertising. My Dad rode the train daily for 16 years and so did I every time I went into the city. The little tune at the end will forever be stuck in my mind. https://fb.watch/htNHmEjrE2/
Well, the ad was cute. But I was distracted at the :45 mark, and I had to do some net searching. I've never seen a Crandall cab before.
Crandalls were a good example of economy on the Cheap & Nothing Wasted. Shot these in the mid-70s, at North Western Station in Chicago, Arlington Heights and Barrington respectively.
If they would have made the nose straight out instead of sloping, they wouldn't have looked like the nose was drooping and ready to fall off. Doug
In spite of my comment about the Crandall cabs, it WAS very innovative to make use of the B units which the C&NW purchased relatively cheaply from the U.P. Doug
The thrifty C&NW converted some B Units to road slugs. I can remember seeing these as a kid, used on long manifests grinding along at what seemed like walking speed. I didn't have a camera then, so never got any photos.
Crandall 2-fer, 1975 or 1976 at Barrington, IL. The 502 is tied down in the coach yard and the 505 is pushing eastbound to Chicago .... on the left hand main of course. Mainline grows to three tracks at the signal bridge in the distance.
