I agree with both the BL2 and E-7 in Pere Marquette..... Steam is not my bag, but I do know the Berkshires and they are O.K. by me Harold

I'ma C&O fan (Go Figure) I LOVE the B&O so, an then the C&O being a sister railroad you all know where this is going so,.... I have to say for a diesel, the BL-2 as well, or the GP-7/9's, (Love that high nose, an then the GP-30 (My all time favorite iesel body style, an in steam just give me an H-8..... HUGE beast from the east, like a sister to my beloved B&O EM-1!

The post WWII L-2A Hudsons with the Franklin Type B rotary cam poppet valves. Theoretically, they should've been superb locomotives. Does anyone know about any articles or studies of their performance compared to the pre-war L-2 Hudsons such as the photographed one posted above by "Fitz"?
As a new member to the board, I had to dredge this up. My absolute favorite C&O locomotive is F-17 4-6-2 #470 in it's post WW-II configuration. It was the only F-17 left with a Worthington feed water heater as all others lost theirs to the L-1 4-6-4s that were rebuilt from the F-19 class in 1946. The Elesco heaters from the F-19s were applied to #471-475. The Worthington heaters fit under the streamlined cowl of the L-1, where the Elesco did not, and since there was one more F-17 than F-19, the #470 bacame a one-of-a-kind locomotive....and aint she a beauty?
There was a two part article written by Gene Huddleston, and published in the April 1988 and May 1988 issues of Mainline Modeler magazine that discussed the performance of the L-2 and L-2a 4-6-4s. Well worth reading! The May 2006 issue of the C&OHS magazine was devoted to the C&O built L-1 Hudsons, and also contained an article of the virtues of Poppet valves with comparisons to the piston valve. Have to be, hands down, the H-8 Alleghany. It represents the ultimate power on the C&O. Now if only Athearn would produce one in N-Scale! Berkmeister
I have to say the C&O GP9 is my favorite, but I am a little biased since I get to ride in one of our two ex-C&O geeps on a regular basis. I'll go with C&O J3a Greenbrier #614 as my favorite steam locomotive.

My favorite C&O locos are the H-8 Allegheny, K-4 Kanawha, and the T-1 Texas (Which also became the Pennsy's J-1 and J-1a).
