Cal Northern renumber an SD40??? (edited title) California Northern has two lease SD40 numbered 6412 and 6413. These were previously leased by and sublettered for NWP. Recently a similar SD40 has been spotted with a 4xxx series number and CFNR sublettering. Is this one of the NWP units renumbered??? Any help is appreciated.
Ok a recent phone call confirms there are now two of these units and they are numbered 4097 & 4098 and that it is believed they are the ex NWP units with new patches and CFNR subletters. However A recent email I've recieved indicates these may be two additional SD40-2s picked up by CFNR. Anybody know?????
I remember driving around Napa end of last October and seeing an SD40-2 in EMD leasing blue. Don't have the # with me.
YoHo, There were two originally. Ex EMD,Conrail leasors used by Northwestern Pacific. California Northern later picked up the lease. They were numbered 6412 & 6413. You probably saw one of these if it was back in October. (Recently spotted in the last two months are two very very similar units numbered 4097 & 4098 and lettered for CFNR.) However, I did see a few months ago another blue SD40-2 on the line at Napa Jct. Wasn't in either number series. This could be one of the new units? Gotta go did up my pic and keep it handy just in case.
Is their business picking up? Have they added some trackage? Also, any news on the old NWP? Will it ever be revived? Boxcab E50
I keep hearing rumors bout the NWP. Something about work starting on the lower end. Highly doubtful though. As for CFNR, I keep hearing that they lost yet another customer but lately they've been using the heck outa the SD40-2s they got. Too bad they didn't keep the SD9s they once had. No additional operations that I've heard of have been added. New runaround track being put in place at the end of a branch in Woodland,CA though. This will help facilitate some of the switching ops being done in the north end of Woodland.
I hate to see any trackage lost. hope some day, some way, the NWP can be revived. The CFNR customer lost- Did they go under? Or switch to trucks? Something to do with RR service? Or? RailAmerica past history has me wondering.... Boxcab E50
I have a shot of 6412. Who owns the SD9s that are rusting away by the Schellville Depot on the road to Sonoma? I remember seeing a C&NW F-unit there back in Jan 2001 too. This is a shot from 2001 The pictures I got last October show much more pathetic looking equipment. I can't even read the number boards. The NWP was deperssing, all that track in booming communities and nothing comes of it.
I can't name any particulars on lost customers. Just seems that everytime I turn around, they've had another customer go outa business or switch to trucks. They seem to be doin very well however. The stuff in Schellville is privately owned. I forget the name of the gentleman who has it. Think he has also purchased an ex CCT GP18 that is stored down near Turlock also. Uses the reporting marks of BUGX.
Driving through there was a hoot both times I did it. I'm tooling along thinking about Wine and all of a sudden in the middle of a winery this railroad equipment is sitting around. I think the Depot has an NWP sign on it. Am I making that up? Also, the little historical society up at the Santa Rosa Depot was cool. I want that photo from Ft. Bragg. Also Also, can't miss the NWP car ferry down at the Maritime museum in San Francisco.
Thanks to an answer in another thread, I finally was able to verify these units!! CFNR has indeed renumbered 6412 & 6413 to 4097 & 4098. Very cool!! Now I just gotta get pics.
John- Is there a roster on your web site? Also, am curious about their numbering system. Any reason for choosing 40xx series? Boxcab E50
Yes, roster is on my website and has been updated to include this latest development. Tons of pics on it as well. I too am wondering about the numbering series. Why just patch these units without full paintjobs. Might be something similar to what CCT is doing with their numbering system. ?????
Thanks to a very cool guy Jeremy Levish for taking pics just a couple hours ago, I've got pics of these two renumbered units on the roster as well. Also thanks to Jeremy for getting the frame numbers to help research these units!!
As I hear the old Mission Impossible theme playing in the background, "your next asignment....." Boxcab E50
Well....the GP15s and SD9s don't fit but look at the rest of the roster. The new GP20 is #20xx, the GP30 they had was #30xx, the GP35 was #35xx, now the SD40s are #40xx. Seems to fit. My buddy delivers to the CFNR office in Woodland so I'll send him on this assignment. Now hopefully nothing self destructs. LOL
