My two cents: If you painbt the cars, do the base coat of white/cream in an enamel and try to match the green in a acrylic. Why? Beause the acrylic paints can be undone with 97% Isoprpyl alcohol, and not take up the enite paintscheme. It also works to be able to wipe up bleed-outs under the masking. Also, I'd reccomend not ripping the motor out of the F40 if you're gonna do a two ender. Talgo or not, pushing a 10 car whip at speed with an engien at the "back" is askign for de-railments. a pull-pull is operationally a more sound approach. and as long as you don't have any reversing sections, two DC engines will run together.
Most weekdays, I see at least one of these Talgo trains either arriving or leaving Union Station. I work close-by. The classic configuration would be F59PHI in Cascades colors on one end and F40PH control cab on the other. ONCE in a while I will see an F40PH in one of the more recent schemes as the control cab. Also, sometimes there will be a GE P42 instead of the F59PHI, but those instances are usually short-lived.
If anyone's interested I'm going to try and make an album of the Talgo train as it is currently soon. My layout is a work in progress so I hope the kitchen table is a suitable background.
Sorry I haven't uploaded the photos yet, I've been a little preoccupied. I managed to get the f59 working properly however. I had to undo whatever the previous owner had done to the wiring in it and clean everything. It now runs as good as an Athearn of its time.
I picked up April's issue of Trains and discovered that on page 46 is a story about the Cascades line.
The long awaited and poorly shot Talgo. My wife's camera has gone mia so these will have to do. Sorry. Talgo Bar car and diner next to a Walthers superliner diner. All cars are HO scale. F59 with end car. Control cab Between cars
also, Poor shot of the bar car. Interior is very much like the real ones. Almost all of the talgo in frame. We're still working on it as a whole. As you can see, I haven't swapped out couplers on the f40 yet, but most of its metal work is gone in preparation for paint. Everything else on the table is to help decide what I need to do (and get) for the layout.
I can't see any pictures!!!! I have moved a little further along on making the vacuform plug for the batwings. Well, I bought the 2x2x12 piece of balsa. That's as far as I got before things got busy. I have the 2D views of the end cars, so I just need to glue those to the sides of the block and start cutting away at the bandsaw. Once I get the basic profile, I can start forming the ears on the tablesaw.
Sorry about that, the album was set to private. I'm still looking for paint myself. I did manage to put some of my old layout together for some tests. So far the talgo runs fine in both directions but it hasn't had to cross a switch yet. I found out my F59 was probably one of first runs that Athearn made but it runs now so I can't complain to much.
Given the pizzacutter wheelsets on the talgos, I'd bet they run over turnouts just fine. I replaced my wheelsets because the flanges were bottoming out on my code 83 track. Let me know what you come up with for paint. I'm really hoping to be able to start forming the batwings this weekend. Best laid plans...
Stumbled across this thread while researching other stuff, but it is related to another of my projects. I have one of those six car sets and I am wanting to do to it what you have done here. I am interested in getting a set of those batwings from you, please feel free to shoot me an email.
Bad news this far. I picked up some paint to test with and the pigment isn't thick enough to cover in 2 coats. It just goes on semi transparent and the 2nd coat doesn't help. I'll have to find another make that has more pigment then thinner in it.
Floquil Enamel. It went on thick and dried smooth, but pulled out of every detail and edge on my test car. It also dried semi transparent along all the edges. 2nd coat didn't make it any better.
That almost sounds like an adhesion problem. I've had pretty good luck with Floquil. Did you use a primer? What colors did you use? I've actually switched to solvent based Floquil paints from the water based paints. I find they flow better with less spattering.
No it was factory painted. All I did was clean and scuff it. Basically every crack I couldn't sand or detail I didn't want to damage became a problem.
It was just a test car for practice. Its a good thing too, I didn't know it was a flat matte finnish. I'm used to Testers from my plastic kit days and every type of paint used on or in a house. I also picked up 2 used DC Athearn AMD 103s. Ones in the current blue wave scheme and the other is in the fading stripe scheme. They both run much better then I expected and I hope they are more reliable then the prototypes. They look a little out of place next to the Talgo cars however.
