Was out on the sreet waiting for a CSX train passing and their was 3 dip paint jobs on the fly headed towards Hyndman (Cumberland, MD)! The first one was either a SD-50/SD-60, and the second 2 were both SD-70M's....

Sorry guys, I didn't catch the numbers! Thats why I'm not sure of the SD-50/SD-60...Its hard to tell the 2 apart! As for the SD-70M's was noticable by the diesel body style....

    John,
I agree... SD50's and 60's are hard to tell apart. There is a trick to it:

SD50's started in the 8500 series and went thru the 86xx series

SD60's started in the 8700 series; I believe CSX originally only had 10 SD60's (8700-8709) and inherited the rest (SD60I's and SD60M's) thru the Conrail acquisitions. Additionally, I think they picked up a few in the LLPX/EMD trade.

I am sure someone can help fill in the gaps/correct my errors.

    Harold,
I believe the SD-50/SD-60 I seen was the older ones! It had the Spartan Cab, and not the wide comfort cab! So, I don't think it would have been Ex. Conrail units. But then its possible so... I'm not to familiar with the CSX cab numberings yet... I know some but not all. Their was alot of numbers floating around and still are! And being he was going up the moutain from Rockwood PA headed to Cumberland the speed rate was going pretty good... Like Fast Dispatch or whatever CSX calls Fast Frieght. But he was moving at a good rate! So it made it hard to catch the cab numbers of the 3 units! But I know from seeing the loco's what type they were or close to in this case having trouble telling a SD-50 from an SD-60 not catching the cab numbers!

    John,
Well, if they were "spartan cabs", the odds are somewhat 14:1 that they were SD50's vs. SD60's [IMG]

    Harold,
I had made myself look like an A$$ one time over the cab fact on the CSX SD-50's and SD-60 in CSX! They have SD-60's with the Spartan Cabs, as well as the "I" cab abd the Comfort cab "W" in their SD-60 fleet! As for the SD-50's in CSX I believe they are were all Spartan Cab design diesels....

As for the part that made me look bad was the fact that I thought both the SD-50's and SD-60's were all Spartan Cabs! Boy was that a wrong assumption!

    John,
No biggie here ;) I don't believe in berating anyone talking about trains. [IMG] I know CSX does not have anything other than SD50 Spartan Cabs, and don't think they made any for anyone, except a modified version for Canadian roads

    Harold,
It was at a semi-local train club, and me being a steam fanatic, I really didn't keep up to date on diesels to well.... I'm knowledgable on the first generation diesels, EA's through E-8's to SD-7's to SD-9's and GP7's and GP-9's... So the newer ones.. I've been doing some catching up, but I still have alot to learn about the new ones! And some to learn yet about the old ones... So...

But being I was talking to a close friend that also droped his membership to the same train club we were interupted with obne of the big wheels of the club and all and was asking questions on old diesels which was ok. I had no trouble at all with that. Till one of the new era guys had begun to ask questions on the newer diesels which I knew some and went on some asumptions, but the older ones I knew from inside out. As for the new ones I have fun trying to identify their type/body style being I model and stick to the steam and early diesel history... Its not degrading at all it all comes down to the fact of what era your interests are...And how you want or how willing you are to learn about your interests.
