Here are a couple of shots of my embryonic chemical plant. Still needs lots of work.

    Alan,
A great looking structure, did it start as a kit or have you scratchbuilt it?

Also how did you make the chain wire fence?

    Alan,

Nice pics. I'm also interested in how you made the fence. I'm guessing its cut from window screen. Is that correct? One thought on the fence: The posts look a little big to me. What about using metal wire thats a smaller diameter?

The fence is made from wire mesh used in flour mills, to sieve the flour into different grades.

Scot, you are so right about the posts! I only noticed them when I looked at the photo on my computer screen  Cameras can be soooooo cruel :D I will likely replace them now with smaller section wire. The fence actually protects the track into the yard, and also surrounds the small diesel servicing facility, which has no details as yet. More work that needs doing

The building (which needs loads more work) was originally a kit built one which I picked up very cheap at a swapmeet, pulled to pieces, and turned into a building flat in the corner.

Plastruct makes plastic rodding that is small enough in diameter do chain link fence posts. The rodding would also work well for the horizontal pieces that go from the top of one port to the next. I have found that wire does not glue to aluminum mesh very well. Plastic does much better in my experience. The mesh in the photo looks pretty close to scale, much finer than window screening would be. Scale Scenics makes a product called Micro Mesh that is also pretty close to scale. Walthers has it in stock.

I just measured the [posts, and they scale at 9 inches! I will definitely replace them, and make the fence more scale in appearance.

By the way, the mesh is steel. I used to visit a flour mill during a previous employment, and acquired mesh of several different sizes (some too small for N scale!) I have also used some on grilles for #1 scale diesel locomotives. I never realised how useful they would be [IMG]
