Can someone tell me something about the Chicago and Alton RR.. I have a RiverRossi 4-8-2 here from when I was a kid.

Just like to find what goes behind this loco.
    thanks

Rivarossi has some nice sets of cars to go with your loco. Go to your local hobby shop and ask for a look at the Walthers or Rivarossi catalogs.

    Virtual-Bird,

The C&A was subsidiary of the Baltimore and Ohio. It was put for sale by the bankruptcy court in 1938. The GM&O bought when it bought the Gulf and Northern and merged the operations in. During the 1940's the GM&O adopted the maroon and gold paint scheme from the Alton and the Alton herald was placed on some of the Alton's 5290-series Pacifics - the merger was finalized in 1947. After that everything was dieselized.

I would say, you could run heavy-weight passenger cars with the GM&O or Chicago, Alton and St. Louis on them. The Alton ran an extensive commuter service in and out of Chicago and express service to St. Lous.

Special thanks to Don Ball, Jr. "America's Colorful Railroads" and George Drury, "The Historical Guide to North American Railroads".

    Hope this helps...

    Best,

    John

Just want to add, Alton/GM&O Passenger service has in reality never stopped between Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City. It still lives on in Amtrak using some of the original Alton/GM&O names like: The Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutlage. The Alton Limited has been replaced by the "Texas Eagle" but the Mid-night Special is long gone. [IMG] The Maroon Red and Gold of the Alton/GM&O is missed around here (Lincoln, IL. is located on the old Chicago-St.Louis-Kansas City line) but the new Inter-City Paint on the Amtrak trains looks nice!
