Okay this is it. i'm going to retire the " Shadow Mountain Ry" for a new name. The new layout will be freelance. i only have one steamer for excursions. i love my diesels, so the layout runs equipment from the 40's to present. The layout will be mainly present day. i'm running on 24" to 30" radi. i like running containers and mixed freight. In fact it looks alot like what CP runs through Calgary. The layout has mountains, plains, and ocean. What i need is some ideas for a name i've come up with "Cal Alta Rail" ( which i think someone already has) , "Alta Rail Link" , "Alberta Rail" , " A & B" (Alberta & BC) ..., So please give me some suggestions or let me know if u like one of the above names . How about a couple of these: Alberta Rail Link Western Canadian Rail Link Western Canadian and Pacific Railroad Calgary and Pacific Railroad Calgary and Western Railroad Trans Canandian Railroad Hope these help. Jeff Augsburg & Concord R.R. (a fictional shortline in Central Illinois) http://www.pegnsean.net/~revnjeff
Just throw a couple of place names together even if the railroad doesn't go there. Here in Edmonton at the turn of the century there was a railroad called the Edmonton, Yukon & Pacific. Despite the name the railroad ran to neither the Yukon or the Pacific. It actually had less than 13km of track and just ran from one side of the river to the other! And just in case anyone's interested in some prototype "excuses" The railroad used to dig their coal out of the side of the hill and straight into the tender. Also the bridge across the river was used by both train and vehicular trafic. When the train needed to cross they had to stop the cars at both ends as there wasn't enough room for both! [ 20. OK, how about these: Calgary Pacific Calgary Western Alberta & Great Western Alberta Western Alberta Grand Pacific Calgary, Edmonton & Pacific Edmonton, Calgary & Pacific Alberta Wheat Belt Calgary & Transcontinental Grand Trunk Alberta Hope this gives you some new ideas. And BTW, it doesn't matter if the RR doesn't actually serve Edmonton. The Spokane, Portland & Seattle, for example, never served Seattle at all.
You could call it the "Frisco Alberta Ranier Transcontinental RR." Or just use the initials if you have a short tender.
Oh Watash, you're a real gas, man! Seriously though, try these: Western Canada- the Fraser River Line South Alberta & Pacific
Canadian Central Canadian and Atlantic Calgary, Alberta, and Eastern CanRail (like Conrail) Calgary & Eastern Calgary Central
Thankyou very much guys. i liked all your ideas. The names were great. i put a bit together from a few of the names and i came up with this : TransAlberta Rail (TABR) Having all those names to choose from really helped. Okay, how does this look? i don't quite follow the procedures for identification; TAR as to TABR, can someone explain in a little more detail. [ 20. November 2002, 21:58: Message edited by: railery ]
Railery: I'd suggest one revision: Instead of Trans Alberta Rail, use TransAlberta Rail. It is more along the lines of modern corporate penchants to smooth names together, like Montant RailLink, Camas Prairie RailNet, US Bancorp, PacifiCorp, etc.... Incidentally, the reporting marks TAR are not taken according to the AAR. But you might also think about a variation or two: TAB TRAB TABT As an example, local to me is the Portand & Western, but rather than use P&W or PWRR, they use PNWR. It's those kind of "off" things that often add that extra dash of realism. Just a suggestion or two! <G>
Thanks Abcraghead What is the aar? i don't know about any standards for the reporting marks, i thought the initials of the company. So TAR does not conform?
