I am currently chopping the nose on a perfectly good high nose gp7. I have got all the cuts made and have a pretty good plan about assembly but I do have a question. What do I use to fill the holes and gaps in the shell? I used to have some putty from testors but the was a long time ago. What do you use? Wood putty? bondo for automotive? I haven't a good guess on what to use. If anyone has an idea I am open for it. I don't want this model to sit around for too long it will get lost with all my other "round too it" projects. Thank you Barry S
Barry, my old standby has been Squadron Green putty. It should still be available and more than good enough to fill in the cracks and blemishes.
progress Ok I am thankful for the answers guys now I have to find the stuff. Here are some pictures. The boys at the shop are sure fast these days, I am not sure due to the bad economy they are trying to impress the boss or what. The unit just rolled in from Florida looking as shiny as a new penny. Everyone in the shop was impressed on how clean it looked and no one wanted to touch that new looking paint. But the boss said cut'er and they don't want to go home without a paycheck so they set to work. Well it wasn't 10 minutes before the old nose and cab where gone, in fact they worked so fast that the crew didn't even have time to get out. They dropped that cab and started cutting it was a shower of sparks and cloud of smoke filled the shop. Then the noise stopped and the smoke started to clear. The room was clearing out and all that was left was a freshly chopped nose geep. The boss is going to be really happy about this one no over time on this job!!! -Barry S
That's going to be one fine chop job. I think your boys got trained by the guys at the CN shops... I like that second photo (and the description in your text) - it reminds me of a few cartoon moments where the occupants of a vehicle are suddenly sitting on just the frame of the car, with stunned looks on their faces... I can imagine the crew of the loco saying "what the h..." laugh:arghh:
