When I was much younger I would think nothing of standing out in a brisk wind at 30 below just to take train pictures. Now I'm glad I did 'cause my own railway is a mid 70's operation and those photos come in handy.

The proto-file at www.wvrr.ca has four new pics that pretty much show what day to day wintertime railroading is all about in northern Ontario and Saskatchewan.

    Enjoy

I also have a few cold days photos. Even have some taken this last winter. Am glad for what I did capture. But it takes quite a bit of talking to myself, in order to go out there these days. It's mid-June, and just looking at your photos makes me feel cold. Brrrrr...

http://www.wvrr.ca/prototype/photo_27.htm Even though they've got an FPA-4 and FP9, this train still has a steam generator car. Was that normal? That is, could these engines pull more cars than they could heat - at least at this time of year?

The daily schedule between Kapuskasing and Cochrane had steam generator cars both ways during the winter months. This may have been 'insurance' because there were seldom more than two revenue cars in the consist.

I can't even imagine how fast it would cool down in those cars if the heat ever went off.
