Looking for pictures of the Depot in Sterling, IL. Anyone able to head me in the right direction? Checked the historical society in Sterling but none available.

From your local Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society website

Okay, where do you want it? Moving the Chicago and Northwestern Depot in 1924 had to be a tremendous undertaking, even if it were only moved east a couple hundred yards from Avenue B location to just west of 1st Avenue in Sterling. Photo by Industrial Studio; submitted to the historical society by Don Goshert.

I'm actauly a Member/Contributor to that site and sadly all they have is what folks have uploaded there and/or have links to their sites. It's mainly of places that still exist in some form. If you look at their NY listing, all you will see a is link to my DHVM wewbsite as well as to another website of a friend of mine...

I am a past member, but still a contributor. In fact, during coming months I will be updating Mark with more. As soon as I can make a quick trip to confirm or better describe a few things.

What I was thinking is more along the lines of finding someone via their Group, who'd have photos collected. I have done so in the past and had good luck.

I called and was told that some of the vol. don't know where to look for things and thus say we don't have it but was told that this is not what a historical Soc. is all about.

I asked for additional information and she told me that what was found by St-Lion was all they had and it was only recently through an estate sale that these pictures were found. When passenger service stopped that National Mfg(Now Stanley Tool) purchased the property from C&NW and raised the depot for an addition to the plant. There for some reason was never much kept by the HS on that Depot.

As a kid I lived two blocks away and visited it often. Road the old "400" out of there many times and remember standing along side those big green cars.

After those experiences who wouldn't be interested in trains.

Thanks for all of your interest.

Try checking with that local property tax assessing agency. They usually have at least a photo and some sketches of dimensions. If not more.

Also, check with the fire department. They may have such information filed in order to practice and plan attacking procedures.

Hopefully someone still has the building info in an archive.

I always get a sick feeling in my gut when HS's say they that kind of thing. You would think that every HS was there to help preserve history in any way possible. You can certainly see in many HS offices today that if no one on staff cares about "X" then history for that will vanish but if they have someone that cares about "Y", they will have more about that then anything else. Something as simple as Photos/Documents in today's time can be saved digitally at very little cost for generations to enjoy. That's why I try to get so much online these days before that shoebox of photographs ends up in the trash from someones elses estate that didn't think was worth anything to anyone. Who knows, that might be the only photograph of the station that still exists and thank goodness someone saved it and put it online for you to find later. Having also that piece of information in the description is worth gold to someone later doing research such as yourself.

Got a call from the HS today and the person I talked with was amazed that there was not more for me. She said the president of the SHS at the time the depot was raised was a real train buff and who's father was present at the driving of the final spike and was in that famous photo. He and family are long gone now. She was sure that he had documentation on that depot but after his passing about 35 years ago and no children that the information either was sold or tossed.

Thanks everyone for suggestions on where to look, as I will keep trying for further info. The street side photo is what I would like to find as it was an unusual look.
    Thanks!!!!!
