Holy cow--a whole family! What were they? Western Diamondbacks? I counted 4, but still! I have yet to see any snakes on any railfan adventure I have been on. Wierd, as I have been all over the country in the most desolate and rugged areas as well. I usually make lots of racket when I hike, maybe that helps.

I think there are a total of 5 in the pic. The hardest one to spot is in the upper left hand corner of the photo, under a rock. This photo was taken two weekends ago and I too thought they'd not be around. Maybe this is where they will stay for the winter. I'll post of photo of the concrete thing here soon. That way you'll get an idea as to what it may be.

Hemi, They very well could be. But I'm no snake expert. Ken this thing is located just east of cohasset pit, just a little ways from where huntzinger road crosses the ROW. It is on the same side as some of the power poles. I have no other photos of it. So I'm not even sure if its RR related.
I certainly can't think of anything specific. Perhaps we'll need to ask someone such as Allen Miller? Boxcab E50
Is it next to the ROW? If so, it might be a signal battery box? Any traces of a signal base nearby? I know the railroads around here at one time had round ones for batteries.
Ken, Im headed off to an local meet with a bunch of ex-milwaukee road employees and Allen may be attending. I'll be sure to ask! Also going to see what other kinds of info/stories I can dig up! The closest signal bases are pretty far away from this thing.
I got some time to begin working on the columbia river bridge today. I have a total of 684 scale feet done. Got a lot more to do....
The photo of the "thing" at Cohasset, could it be a foundation for a scale house, since they had to weight ballast cars?
I don't believe there was a scale at Cohasset. Was just looking to see if I could find any indication of such. But nothing shows in profile or ETT. Hmmm. Now you have me wondering if they did bother to scale, where? Boxcab E50
I have sent an email off to Allen for his review. I also found this structure on a map...Cohasset is to the top and Huntzinger Rd. crosses the ROW below (both are not shown on this map).
To the right of track, and your arrow, appears to be a at least "borrow" area. Base for some sort of loading device? Surely they'd not need a drying facility for sand... Boxcab E50
Mr. Miller stated the only thing he could think of was an old base to a water tower/tank. After some additional research I found some old notes of mine that mention there was a tank at cohasset at one time.
You'd think they'd take water at Beverly. And have enough to make Boylston, or Kittitas. Stopping at starting on that grade would not be fun. Sure seems like an odd location for water. Unless it was for other than train service? Boxcab E50
