INDIA: Following successful deployment on the Howrah – Dhanbad route last year, the first air-conditioned double-deck train to operate from Delhi to Jaipur was flagged off by Minister of Railways Mukul Roy and Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dik¤¤¤¤ on August 24. The stainless steel coaches have been designed and manufactured by IR’s Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala. The Railways Minister said the design was a ‘mighty challenge’ because of the need to not to exceed IR standards for length, width and height. Each double-deck coach accommodates 120 passengers, rather than 78 in the Shatabdi-type single-deck cars, meaning more passengers can travel ‘at most reasonable costs with the comfort of air-conditioned travel.’ More...
